Check the Voice Chat option on the main menu. Download the Skype program (from our server so it's actually fast). Set up an account. Edit your profile to add the Skype username you've selected. Return to the Voice Chat page and talk with other members.

The program has great voice quality (better than MSN), works from behind most firewalls, is quite accessible, and generally rocks.

The Voice Chat section was explains all of this in a bit more detail.

Post if you encounter problems or have questions. I'll check back after I've slept some.

Chris

Hmm, haven't heard of skype, is it better or just as good as ventrilo?

The quality depends some. The delay is less than Ventrilo. Skype is more designed for talking to one other person, just like a telephone.

I just downloaded the Skype software. I have partial sight and use ZoomText. I must say that I was impressed with the voice quality of Skype. I would like to ask a couple questions.
1. Is there any break-up of the voice conversation? My wife and a friend in Lake Charles LA talk over MSN quite regularly every day. Some times the conversation will break up for a second or two every so often. Does Skype have a consistant conection over broad band connection, (which my wife Denise and her friend use)?
2. Scripts. As mentioned before, I don't use Jaws but Denise and her friend do. The scripts, she says, are not functioning properly, as Jaws will read "everything but the right thing", thus making things like adding people to a contact list and such. How soon will the scripts be fixed, as I heard from another member here say.

Thanks.

I've noticed that the quality is very consistant, but of course it will depend on the network connections of those talking and the interviening network.

If you're referring to the scripts mentioned on the recent Main Menu review, I'm the person developing them. The latest scripts (version 1.4) work well for me and the people who I've spoken with that are using them. If the latest version is being used, and problems still persist, I would be very interested in talking with one or both people to figure out what is happening.

HI,
I went to the page to download your script, and there was a file, JFWsk12.zip. This was back on Wednesday night when I got it from your page: http://www.panix.com/~ccn/ That is what was there unless you updated in the mean time. I will look again.

Upgrading would be a good idea. That was 1.2, which had serious issues. I have 1.4 on the site now which seems to be working well for me. I'll put 1.5 up probably tomorrow, but its additions are pretty minor. I'm ChrisN on Skype if you want to chat.

I currently do not have a microphone connected to this computer, but I think one did come with the system. Things have been rather crazy around here lately, but hopefully I can start chatting with people soon enough. Thanks for adding this feature.

Hi, I tried downloading skype and the setup program doesn't seem to work properly. Why is that happening?

Hello. We are having a minor problem with Ventrilo passwords. If you've tried to log in and it said the password was wrong, it would be because our system that automatically updates the file when a new user is added isn't updating, so we're doing it manually currently. I'll run another update which should catch you, Joe, and others. Hopefully, this will become automatic again very soon.
